Knysna is known for it's beautiful spaces and is a food-lover's paradise!
Thesen Island
Thesen Island is one of our favourite places to spend an afternoon or evening in Knysna. This vibrant waterfront area offers a wonderful mix of restaurants, cafés, boutique shops and beautiful views over the water. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed lunch, sunset drinks or dinner by the marina, Thesen Island never disappoints.
Knysna Waterfront
The Knysna Waterfront remains one of the town’s most popular destinations. Here you’ll find restaurants, shops, cafés, boat trips and beautiful views across the lagoon. It’s a great place for a leisurely stroll, a meal by the water or simply watching the boats come and go.
Leisure Isle Walk
For a slower pace, we highly recommend a walk around Leisure Isle. This peaceful residential island offers some of the most beautiful lagoon views in Knysna and is perfect for an early morning stroll or sunset walk.
Buonissimo Gelato
If you enjoy great coffee, authentic Italian gelato and a relaxed waterfront atmosphere, Buonissimo is well worth a visit. Located approximately 2.5 km from Abalone Lodges, it can be reached via a pleasant walk along the lagoon.
Originally known for its artisanal Italian gelato, Buonissimo has quickly become a local favourite for much more than ice cream. Guests can enjoy excellent coffee, freshly prepared breakfasts, light lunches, focaccias, sweet treats and of course some of the best gelato in Knysna.
Our tip: Stop by for breakfast or lunch and don’t leave without trying the gelato. It is as close to Italy as you’ll find in Knysna.
Île de Pain
A true Knysna institution, Île de Pain has earned a reputation far beyond South Africa. Famous for its artisan breads, pastries and excellent breakfasts, it is one of the most popular breakfast spots on the Garden Route. Located on Thesen Island, it is the perfect place to start your day with freshly baked croissants, quality coffee and a relaxed atmosphere.
Tapas & Oysters
Located right on the water at the Knysna Waterfront, Tapas & Oysters is one of our favourite places to enjoy a relaxed lunch or sunset drink overlooking the lagoon. The menu features fresh oysters, seafood, tapas and local wines.
Our tip: Visit on a Friday afternoon or evening when there is often live music, creating a wonderful atmosphere by the water.
Knysna gin distillery & cocktail bar
Tucked away in Knysna’s industrial area, The Gin Bar is one of those hidden gems that many visitors would otherwise miss. Don’t let the location fool you – this relaxed and welcoming venue has become a favourite among locals. Located approximately 1.5 km from Abalone Lodges.
Enjoy a locally crafted gin, a creative cocktail or your drink of choice while challenging friends to a game of pool or one of the available board games. The atmosphere is casual, unpretentious and perfect for spending a few hours unwinding after a day of exploring.
Our tip: If you’re looking for a laid-back evening away from the busy tourist spots, The Gin Bar is well worth a visit.
